New Year's Skincare Resolutions #3: Clean Your Bedding

On average, a person spends anywhere between six to nine hours in bed.

Considering that we shed skin AND sweat in our sleep, our bedding can play host to plenty of unsanitary, bodily debris. Consistently failing to clean your sheets can affect your skin profoundly. Especially when you realize your skin’s in direct contact with them for several hours a day. Having healthy skin is the result of hard work, commitment, and discipline and this is one of its simplest requirements. Isn’t ironic that beauty sleep could ruin your skin’s beauty?

At Dermatology Consultants of Frisco, we are committed to ensuring that your New Year skin resolutions are fulfilled. Follow our easy tips to make your skin better and healthier.

The Beauty of the Skin

To reiterate our early point, taking care of your skin isn’t about sophisticated procedures, but the simple things we do. As you sweat at night and shed skin, dead skin cells accumulate in your bedding. This poses not only a threat to your skin’s health but your overall health. Dander, dust mites, and other allergens further accumulate and thrive in dirty linen. The bacteria trapped in your sheets’ fibers can go on to cause skin irritations and a myriad of other problems.

Fungal Breeding Site

Without proper cleaning, beds are a perfect breeding ground for fungi. Dirty bedding may trigger fungal infections, skin breakouts, and other opportunistic allergies. Bacteria and dust mites can easily aggravate allergies and interfere with your everyday comfort and health. In severe cases of sheet neglect, mold and the mildew are the culprits activating your allergies. It is also worth noting that mattress care is as important as regular sheet washing. Old mattresses are a haven for germs and parasites that could wreak havoc on your skin.

Cleaning and Changing the Bedding

At Dermatology Consultants of Frisco, we believe that making sure your bed sheets and pillows should be washed and changed as part of your skincare routine. Your sleeping surfaces should always be kept fresh. People often ignore the importance of deep cleaning their mattress. Mattresses go for years without proper cleaning and foster a legion of threats to your skin.

At least twice a year, your bed should be deep cleaned to eliminate the allergens that form on its surface. Deep cleaning involves vacuuming it with an upholstery attachment. Any spots on the mattress are cleaned thoroughly and the bed is then promptly deodorized. Also, it’s worth noting that a mattress should be replaced every 5 to 10 years.

Your skin comes in contact with your sheets for hours on a daily basis. Thus, there’s a pressing need to keep them germ-free. We recommend cleaning them at least once every two weeks. Be extremely mindful of your bedding’s material and wash them accordingly. Pay close attention to the state of your sheets as well – worn out sheets are no good.

Pillows should be washed a few times a year to avoid wear. Fluffing your pillow every day helps get rid of accumulated dust. We recommend cleaning your duvet and its covers once every two to three months. Depending on the directions of the label and the material, some should be machine washed, dry cleaned or hand washed.

Believe it or not, your pajamas are an essential part of your bedtime skincare routine. We recommend changing your nightwear daily to fight dead skin and bacteria accumulation. Both of which are serious threats to your skin. In the summer, this tip is especially key. The higher temperatures bring more night sweats, and with night sweats come the accumulation of sweat oil – abundant with its bacteria and fungi.

It is never too late to take control of the situation. Dermatology Consultants of Frisco are always here to give better and improved skincare tips that will make 2019 better. Make a date with us to learn more new year skincare resolutions and even a skin examination.
