Alopecia Areata Treatment

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss on the scalp, face, and sometimes other body parts.

This type of hair loss can affect both men and women and can present in children and adults. Hair loss generally occurs in round patches and while the symptoms are not overwhelming, the hair loss can be devastating to the individual.

Although the exact cause of alopecia areata is not fully understood, it is thought that extreme stress can play a role. We know that the immune system attacks the hair follicles, causing the hair to fall out. This condition can sometimes fully reverse on its own, but often treatment is needed to help improve the condition.

Hair loss can also occur from another autoimmune disorder that affects the thyroid, which is why it is very important to get a proper diagnosis before seeking treatment.

Treatment consists of topical prescriptions, local injections, and sometimes prescription pills.
