How to Keep Your Skin Healthy During Winter

Skin doctors often warn patients that winter weather is very harsh on the skin.

Cold dry air and low humidity, can leave skin feeling chapped and rough due to the loss of essential moisture. Skin can be damaged even more by the effects of dry indoor heat, hot showers, and harsh skin cleansers. To reduce chapping, redness, and itching while keeping the skin more healthy this season, these tips may help.

1. Cleanse Skin in Lukewarm Water

Hot showers and baths feel good in the winter, but whenever possible, especially when just washing the face or hands, use lukewarm water to avoid stripping oils from the skin.

2. Moisturize Skin Immediately After Washing

It is important to moisturize skin right after you wash. Applying to damp, freshly washed skin helps seal in moisture. Keep a bottle near the shower, bathtub, and every sink. Apply liberally every time you wash.

3. Choose Moisturizer Carefully

Skincare specialists recommend oil-based rather than water-based products, as they are more likely to help skin retain moisture in the winter and absorb more deeply into the skin. There are also natural moisturizers made with natural, hydrating ingredients like lavender, chamomile, jojoba, and more, which help soothe dry, itchy skin.

4. Protect

Get used to wearing gloves and scarves to protect skin from cold winds, rain, and snow. Also, don’t forget the sunscreen. Winter sun rays can be just as damaging as those of the summer sun, according to well-known skincare specialists.

5. Humidify

Indoor heating systems dry out the air considerably. Installing a humidifier in the home will put moisture back into the air and help prevent skin from drying out.

6. Drink

During colder months, we tend to drink less water. Don’t forget that skin needs to be hydrated just as much in the winter as in the hot summer months.

7. Overnight Moisturize

Dryer areas tend to lose moisture faster than other areas on the body. Apply a deep moisturizing lotion to hands and feet nightly, and wear cotton gloves or socks..

8. Exfoliate

The buildup of dead skin cells can block the absorption of moisture. Exfoliating body washes and masks are also helpful in the winter months. Apply nightly to hands and feet, then apply moisturizer.

9. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens, and Irritants

Winter skin is more fragile and sensitive. Avoid chemical-laden detergents and irritating fabrics (such as wool) and use moisturizers and mild cleansers designed for sensitive skin. Schedule an appointment with a skin doctor if signs of eczema, psoriasis, or severe allergies are present.

10. Hydrate From the Inside Out

Eating foods high in water content can help hydrate skin from the inside out. Try watermelon, cantaloupe, apples, oranges, kiwi, and watery veggies like celery, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, etc.

11. Change Your Cleanser

Some cleansers can be extremely drying to the skin. Make sure to choose formulas which are gentle instead. After washing, don’t leave the skin bare for more than 30 seconds, as this can dehydrate it.

12. Use DIY Masks

Homemade hydrating masks can provide much-needed moisture in the winter months. Use natural moisturizing ingredients like honey, avocado, yogurt, olive and jojoba oils, almond oil, bananas, and aloe.
